Recent Olathe West High graduate Elyes Ellouz was named the Gatorade Kansas Boys Soccer Player of the Year for the 2021-2022 school year. In the fall, Ellouz led the Owls to a 6A state boys soccer title.
“[T]ruly honored and blessed to receive this. [T]hanks to all my teammates, coaches, friends and family, and Allah who have helped me with everything and anything,” he said of the honor on Twitter.
Gatorade high school athletes of the year are awarded based both on their athletic achievements and their academic performance. According to a press release, his GPA was 3.92.
Colby Mnich has been hired as the new tennis coach at Olathe West High.
Ellouz, a midfielder who finished an extraordinary high school career with the match-defining, overtime goal in the state championship game last fall, netted more than 25 goals in his final season and helped secure the Owls’ second state soccer title in three years. He was also on the team in 2019 when West won their first boys soccer title.
Matt Trumpp, Olathe West’s head coach, told the Olathe Reporter previously that Ellouz “works harder than any player we’ve had here.” He was named, from a ballot among Olathe high school soccer coaches, the Olathe Player of the Year as well. He’s also the 6A boys soccer Player of the Year and the Sunflower League Player of the Year.
Ellouz has announced his decision to play soccer for Olathe’s own MidAmerica Nazarene University in the fall.
During the 2019-2020 school year, fellow West alum and team leader Jony Muñoz was also named the Gatorade Kansas Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Earlier this year, Olathe North High’s Anjali Hocker Singh was named the Gatorade Kansas Girls Cross Country Player of the Year.
