Olathe schools stay open Wednesday as KC area school districts close after threat of gun violence in Missouri

The Olathe school district Education Center, which is home to several of the administrative offices, is located at 14160 Black Bob Rd.

Summer activities in the Olathe school district are moving ahead as scheduled Wednesday, but other KC metro area districts closed after threats of a mass shooting were made against the Blue Springs school district.

The Kansas City Star reported that at least eight districts had closed on Wednesday out of caution, all in the Jackson County, Missouri, area across the state line. The Independence and Lee’s Summit districts are among those that decided to close for Wednesday.

“The FBI has confirmed that the individual in question whose whereabouts are unknown is dangerous,” the Blue Springs School District said on Facebook Tuesday of the mass shooting threat. “We know this will be a burden to many of our families and we ask for your understanding and flexibility as we continue to keep our students, staff, and schools safe.”

“We wanted you to know that we are working closely with local law enforcement and at this time there are no threats to any of our buildings,” a statement to families reads. “Should there be any changes to this, we would alert parents and the community immediately.”

Earlier this year, a shooting at Olathe East High left three people injured, including the school resource officer, an assistant principal and an 18-year-old student, who has since been charged with attempted capital murder for his alleged shooting of the officer. All three have been released from the hospital.
